Definition

The process of affecting the overall gain of an audio file.

It can be thought of as having the same effect as turning a volume control up or down. Peak normalisation will scan an audio file, adjusting the entire amplitude of the wave by the same amount, based on the peak level. For example, if the track 'peaked' at –6db and the normalisation was set to -3db, the gain of the entire track would be +3db.
