Definition

A technique in multitrack recording that lets a performer record over mistakes or change parts previously recorded by punching in and out of record mode while the machine is in playback.

Punching in can be performed by an engineer pushing the right buttons at the right time or the performer hitting a foot switch at the required point. Similar to a drop in/out.
